About

Growing the next generation of singer-songwriters

I founded Harvest Music School in 2025 to share my passion for 1970s singer-songwriter music with students and fans. These beloved songs heard at parties, jams, and campfires are perfect for learning music that’s accessible and fun. They’re also ideal for aspiring songwriters looking to develop their artistic voice and play music collaboratively.

In my two decades of teaching, certain artists consistently resonate with students: Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, John Prine, Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen, The Beatles, and many others. Popular requests include “Angel From Montgomery,” “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright,” and “Heart of Gold.” Despite their complexity, these songs typically use just three or four chords and simple strumming patterns!

This genre draws heavily from folk, blues, country, and early rock. Classic songs from these influences like Elizabeth Cotton’s “Freight Train” and Hank Williams’ “Hey Good Lookin’” are essential study for songwriters and equally accessible to play.

Later artists either preserved or reimagined the tradition. Tom Petty’s “Free Falling” and Tim Buckley’s “Hallelujah” demonstrate how great songs work acoustically or with full bands. The 90s revival introduced these artists to a new generation through various media formats.

Today, contemporary artists like Amos Lee, Jason Isbell, and Norah Jones continue expanding this tradition. “Sweet Pea” and “Wagon Wheel” remain favorites among my students, showing the genre’s cross-generational appeal.

Harvest Music School is your comprehensive resource for this musical tradition. As a working musician, songwriter, and educator, I provide extensive resources and connections to the wider music community. This music uplifts the spirit and creates a bountiful harvest that everyone can enjoy. Playing, singing, and writing music is in our very bones!
